What are the frequently asked questions and answers about chondromalacia patellae

(2) It can also manifest as difficulty in squatting, effort in standing up from squatting, pain, and often a feeling of weakness and weakness. (3) There may be a ringing sound and a feeling of friction when the joint moves. Continued development can be painful when walking on a flat road and joint swelling.  4.What is interlocking phenomenon? When does it occur?  During the movement of the knee joint, there is a sudden limitation of flexion and extension, as if it is stuck and cannot continue to move, with obvious pain. It is mostly seen in meniscal injury and intra-articular free bodies. Patients with chondromalacia patella sometimes have this phenomenon, mostly due to unsmooth cartilage.  5. Is chondromalacia patellae always accompanied by joint effusion?  No.  Does chondromalacia patella require treatment?  1. If chondromalacia patellae is not treated, will it get better on its own?  If left untreated, painful symptoms may be relieved with rest. However, this is not a cure. Pain may still occur after strenuous exercise.  2.When do I need medication? Is medication mainly for pain relief?  Personally, I think medication is an adjunctive method. It can be applied after the diagnosis is confirmed. Commonly used drugs include anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving drugs and chondrotrophic drugs. The efficacy of chondrotropic drugs is still controversial. Pain relief is a very important treatment modality.  3.What are the pain medications currently used for chondromalacia patellae?  Other types of pain medications can also be used for chondromalacia patella.  4.When do I need to use glucosamine and hyaluronic acid for the treatment of chondromalacia patellae? What are the precautions?  They can be applied after the diagnosis is confirmed. Drugs like glucosamine can be taken for a long time, 2-3 months. Sodium hyaluronate is an intra-articular injection that has a lubricating and protective effect. It is injected once a week for 5 weeks. If the skin around the knee joint is broken, or the swelling in the joint is obvious, injection treatment is not recommended.  5.Is there any effect of closure for the treatment of chondromalacia patellae?  For patients with pure chondromalacia patellae, I personally do not recommend intra-articular closure treatment (meaning hormone injection).  6.Does chondromalacia patellae require surgery? Can it be cured?  The need for surgical treatment requires a comprehensive assessment, and it is recommended to go to an outpatient clinic for examination and ask for the physician’s advice. For some patients, surgery can reduce symptoms and restore movement levels. The degree of cartilage damage is an important factor in the outcome of surgery.
