How long does colic usually last?

Colic usually lasts for one to two hours and may recur for several days. Colic is usually triggered by spasms of the intestinal tubes caused by excessive peristalsis.
Infants under three months of age, patients with acute gastroenteritis and intestinal obstruction of different etiologies are more prone to colic.
1. Infants within three months: Infantile colic is usually caused by strong contraction of the smooth muscle of the intestinal wall or flatulence, usually infants may inhale a large amount of air when drinking milk, resulting in abdominal distension causing colic.
2. Acute gastroenteritis: acute gastroenteritis is mainly nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever and so on. It is usually caused by improper diet in daily life, overeating; or eating cold, rancid, dirty and unclean food, which leads to colic.
3. Intestinal obstruction: Intestinal obstruction refers to the obstruction of the contents through the intestine, such as newborn tumors, slightly larger polyps or inflammation, which causes the obstruction of the contents through the intestine. This leads to spasmodic abdominal cramps.
Patients with mild colic can take atropine, scopolamine and other drugs as prescribed by the doctor or abdominal massage to relieve the pain symptoms. Dietary attention to light and easy to digest.
