Pain in the nerve when biting on a hard object should be ruled out as a splitting of the tooth, which can occur in a tooth with an overbite due to a momentary bite on a hard object. If the fracture has reached the root of the tooth, the tooth may have to be extracted without any possibility of retention. If the extent of the fracture is limited to the crown portion of the tooth, routine root canal treatment can be performed followed by crown restoration to avoid further fracture. If the tooth has a deep cavity due to biting hard object, to exclude the spontaneous pain, the tooth can be soothed with zinc oxide first, and after the symptoms are eliminated, the tooth can be filled with conventional resin.
