Phlegm and Dampness and Stroke

With the increase in the incidence of stroke, the study of its pathogenesis has become increasingly in-depth. On the basis of long-term clinical practice, combined with modern medical theory or experimental research, it is proved that phlegm is the main pathological basis for the development of stroke disease. Because of the shape of obese people mostly belong to phlegm and damp body, plus the consumption of thick diet, good escape and less labor lifestyle, long-term mental stress state, old age and frailty and other comprehensive factors lead to the occurrence and development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, especially the development of stroke. Although there are many causes of stroke, but the liver wind and phlegm type is more common. Patients often have a deficiency of liver and kidney, wind and yang move inside, carrying phlegm to move the meridians, and the veins and collaterals are not smooth, so suddenly the mouth and eyes are distorted, the tongue is strong and speechless, and the body is partially paralyzed. From the overall analysis of the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular diseases, the basic pathogenesis is qi deficiency and blood stasis, and the clinical symptoms are mostly phlegm-based. For example, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, stroke, tremor and palsy and other different cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases have their own pathological characteristics, but phlegm is the common point. The pathological changes of diseases such as cerebrovascular accident, cerebral atrophy, senile dementia, vascular neurological headache, epilepsy, etc. in modern western medicine are all closely related to phlegm from the perspective of Chinese medicine; ischemic stroke has phlegm-damp congestion throughout the pathogenesis and development. Therefore, the treatment of stroke should be based on phlegm. Removing phlegm and eliminating blood stasis is the basic rule in the treatment of stroke. Modern pharmacological research has also shown that most of the phlegm-removing products of Chinese medicine, such as Tien Nan Xing, Gua Pou, Yuan Zhi, Shi Calamus, and Han Xia, have the effects of lowering blood lipids, sedation, anticonvulsant, and improving cerebral blood flow, providing a modern scientific basis for the treatment of stroke.
