Prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease

The number of stents used for patients with cardiovascular disease in China was 180,000 in 2008, grew to 240,000 in 2009, and is expected to exceed 300,000 in 2010. “While many clinicians take pride in this data, I am anxious about the growth of these numbers because it does not control the incidence and lethality of cardiovascular disease in China.” Professor Hu Dayi, chairman of the Cardiovascular Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, made these points at the 2010 China Cardiovascular Metabolic Medicine Research Summit Forum held recently. The climb of cardiovascular disease in China is mainly triggered by poor lifestyles. Therefore, we must start from 5 aspects: reduce the incidence and disability rate of cardiovascular diseases, shift from clinical treatment-oriented to disease-prevention-oriented; realize the shift from laboratory research to evidence-based medicine; shift from simply focusing on numbers to focusing on scientific data; shift from large hospital-centered to community-centered; shift from sitting doctors to community health education and health promotion, so as to construct the defense line of cardiovascular diseases at the source.
