What to do if you have a cracked tooth

The following treatment measures can be taken for a cracked tooth. If a shallow crack exists on the tooth surface and is confined to the enamel layer, the tooth will not be sensitive to temperature stimulation and can be temporarily observed, and care should be taken to avoid chewing hard objects with the affected tooth to prevent further deepening of the crack. If the crack reaches the dentin layer and the tooth becomes sore when exposed to hot or cold stimuli, the crack needs to be removed, the cavity prepared, and filled with composite resin. In order to avoid deeper cracks, the tooth can be prepared and reinforced with a full crown. If the crack causes pulp infection and inflammation, the pulp must be removed under local anesthesia and a metal or all-ceramic crown restoration must be made after completion of root canal treatment.
