For patients with mild to moderate male pattern baldness, the treatment of choice is oral Bofarzil (finasteride). This drug selectively inhibits the enzyme 5a-reductase and reduces the level of dihydrotestosterone in the patient’s serum and scalp. After six months to a year, most patients stop losing hair and experience varying degrees of hair regrowth, with better results achieved with longer doses. It is important to note that Bovacit is only indicated for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men and is contraindicated in women! Topical minoxidil preparations are the second treatment option available. Minoxidil is an antihypertensive drug, later discovered its hair growth effect, and thus has long been used as an over-the-counter drug for the treatment of various hair loss diseases at home and abroad, but the mechanism of its treatment is unclear. After six months to a year of treatment, hair loss can be relieved and thinning and shortening hair partially restored.
