What is Cistanche?

Cistanchis, also known as Cun Yun, is the dried fleshy stem with scaly leaves of Cistanchis or Cistanchis tubiflora in the family of Ledebouriidae, and is a commonly used medicine for treating kidney yang deficiency. Cistanche is warm in nature, sweet and salty in taste, and belongs to the kidney and large intestine meridians. Its effects include tonifying kidney yang, benefiting essence and blood, moistening the intestines and relaxing the bowels. It is used for kidney yang deficiency (lack of yang energy in the kidneys), deficiency of essence and blood, impotence and infertility, lumbar and knee soreness (a feeling of soreness and weakness in the lumbar and knee regions), weakness of tendons and bones, and constipation with dryness of intestines and bowels. It should be noted that Cistanche should not be used by those with yin deficiency and fire (deficiency of yin and essence in the body and the appearance of hyperactive deficiency fire), constipation with heat knot, or loose stools. Although there is no clear adverse reaction to the above medicines, it is recommended to take the medicines under the guidance of a Chinese medicine practitioner, and not to take the medicines by oneself, so as to avoid delaying the condition or having adverse reactions.
