A few misconceptions about diabetes medication

The population with type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing, and there is an upward trend in type 2 diabetes with onset in young adulthood. There is no cure for diabetes and long-term treatment is required. In the clinic, we often see some of these situations, which I personally believe are a few misconceptions about diabetes medication: 1. Taking medication but not monitoring the condition – After the initial medication is effective, the patient takes the medication as prescribed every month, without monitoring blood glucose or regularly checking blood lipids, liver and kidney functions and screening for complications. It is only after several years that the patient again develops dry mouth, excessive drinking or complications that he or she realizes that the blood sugar has risen. These problems would not have occurred if the condition had been monitored and the treatment plan adjusted in a timely manner. In fact, it is very unfortunate that patients also run to the hospital monthly and take their medication daily, but do not meet the standard. Why does the treatment plan need to be adjusted? In the early stage of diabetes onset islet function has lost more than 50%, with the prolongation of the disease, islet function gradually declines, the effect of drugs will have a decline; patients’ lifestyle, combined diseases, changes in liver and kidney function; combined acute and chronic complications; special tests (such as the use of contrast examination), surgery, etc., all need professional doctors to assess the condition and adjust the program. 2. “Chinese medicine and health care products” have no side effects – I do not intend to attack the traditional medicine of our country, on the contrary, as there is still a lack of drugs to cure diabetes, I also hope that there will be effective and safe treatment methods in Chinese medicine. But at present there are a lot of sheep’s head selling dog meat phenomenon, said to be Chinese medicine, health products, but which secretly added western medicine, and some in the regular hospital has been largely eliminated from use. Most of these eliminated western medicine can also lower sugar, and may lower sugar intensity, the main reason for elimination is too much side effects. Such “Chinese medicine and health care products” are really harmful to people, harming the interests of patients and even endangering their lives, and also affecting the correct understanding of Chinese medicine. 3. The addictive nature and side effects of Western medicine. Many diabetic patients at the beginning of the disease will be concerned about once the medication will have to take drugs for life. In fact, diabetes is a chronic disease, its own pancreatic function in the process of gradual decline, it is difficult to fully recover, so the need for long-term or lifelong use of drugs, and not because of drug addiction need to take long-term drugs. Western drugs do have various side effects, and these side effects tend to have individual differences and appear only in a few patients. These drugs often have a detailed list of possible side effects in their instructions, and these side effects are derived from rigorous drug testing and reporting to the State Food and Drug Administration of possible side effects discovered by doctors after use in the clinic, which is very standardized and strict. Usually these side effects are mild and can disappear after stopping the drug or switching to another drug. If a drug has serious side effects, the FDA will require it to be withdrawn from the market and not sold again.
