A baby’s 38.5°C is considered feverish, not normal. Normal temperature for babies: axillary temperature is normally 36-37°C. Anal temperature, also known as rectal temperature is normally 36.5-37.5℃. Oral temperature, also known as sublingual temperature is usually 0.2-0.5℃ higher than axillary temperature. Rectal temperature best reflects the true temperature of the body, but axillary temperature is more acceptable due to the ease of measurement. Fever is defined as an axillary temperature ≥37.5°C or a rectal temperature ≥38°C that fluctuates by more than 1°C during the day. Usually, the degree of fever is judged according to the level of axillary temperature, axillary temperature less than 38 ℃ is low fever; 38-39 ℃ is medium fever; 39-41 ℃ is high fever; > 41 ℃ is ultra-high fever.
