To evaluate the safest and most effective treatments for acute migraine, Minen et al. of the American Headache Society Expert Panel reviewed 68 randomized controlled trials, including 28 injectable migraine medications. The investigators’ recommendations included: 1. None of the drugs received a Class A “must provide” recommendation; 2. Three drugs, metoclopramide, prochlorperazine, and sumatriptan, received a Class B “should provide” recommendation based on Class I evidence; 3. To prevent migraine recurrence, the corticosteroid dexamethasone was also recommended at the B level; 4. Other drugs recommended at the C level include: acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, chlorpromazine, dextroketoprofen, diclofenac, anandamide, haloperidol, haloperidol, ketorolac, and valproic acid; 5. It is recommended to avoid Benadryl, lidocaine and octreotide.
