Enhanced bowel sounds at midnight may be due to mechanical bowel obstruction, indigestion, acute gastroenteritis, or a poor diet. Bowel sounds are the gas-over-water sounds produced by the flow of gas and fluid in the intestinal tract during peristalsis. If there is an increase in intestinal gas, it will be accompanied by an increase in bowel sounds. 1. Mechanical intestinal obstruction: because of the restriction of peristalsis, the gas can not be discharged to bring about an increase in bowel sounds. 2. Indigestion: excessive consumption of spicy and stimulating and soybean products, so that food digestion and produce more gas; gastrointestinal dysfunction so that the food can not be effectively digested and produce too much gas. 3. Acute gastroenteritis: gastrointestinal peristalsis increases, making intestinal sounds stronger. 4. Poor dietary habits, such as swallowing too quickly so that the amount of intestinal gas is too much. There are many possible reasons for the increase in bowel sounds at midnight. Patients are advised to seek medical treatment.
