Intervertebral foraminoscopic technique for lumbar disc herniation

Zhang Tingjie, director of the Pain Department of Peking University Hospital, learned the technique of foraminoscopy for lumbar disc herniation in Germany and has performed many such procedures with promising results. This technique is a minimally invasive surgery in which the intervertebral foramen is enlarged by percutaneous puncture, the endoscope, i.e., the foraminoscope, is placed in a specific location in the spinal canal, the dural sac, the nerve roots and the herniated disc can be clearly seen under direct vision on the display screen, and the herniated nucleus pulposus is removed through a special clamp, which fundamentally relieves the compression on the nerve roots and repairs the ruptured annulus fibrosus, and the patient’s symptoms are relieved immediately after the operation.
