What are the effects of Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan

Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan (牛黄清心丸) has the efficacy of benefiting qi and nourishing blood (replenishing the body’s qi and blood), calming the mind (using medicines of heavy sedative nature to stabilize the mind) and resolving phlegm and quenching wind. It can be used to treat symptoms such as heat in the chest, palpitations, dizziness, speechlessness in stroke, slanting of the eyes and mouth, hemiplegia (inability to move a limb freely), slurred speech, stupor, and phlegm-salivation (abnormal phlegm and excessive production of saliva), which are caused by deficiency of qi and blood and disturbances of phlegm-heat in the upper part of the body. Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan is composed of the Chinese herbs Niu Huang (牛黄), Angelica sinensis (当归), Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong (川芎) and Licorice. In this formula, Niu Huang clears the heart, opens the orifices to dispel phlegm and clear the mind, cools the liver and calms wind; Angelica sinensis nourishes and invigorates blood; Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong invigorates blood and promotes circulation of qi, and dispels wind and relieves pain (disperses wind evil and relieves musculoskeletal pain). The combination of these drugs can benefit Qi and nourish blood, calm the mind and resolve phlegm and wind. The adverse reactions and contraindications of Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan are not clear. It should be used with caution in pregnant women. Meanwhile, because the prescription contains cinnabar and andrographis, it should not be taken in excess for a long time, and should be used with caution in patients with liver and kidney insufficiency.
