The effects of lipoic acid include controlling blood sugar, preventing neuropathy due to hyperglycemia, and having a relatively strong antioxidant effect. Lipoic acid reduces lipid oxidation in nerve tissues, inhibits protein glycosylation, inhibits aldose reductase, and prevents the conversion of glucose and galactose to sorbitol, thus preventing diabetes, controlling blood sugar, and preventing neuropathy caused by hyperglycemia. Both alpha lipoic acid and dihydrolipoic acid, which is a reducing peptide, provide excellent antioxidant effects. The main side effects of lipoic acid are head swelling and dyspnea with too rapid an intravenous drip, which can resolve on its own, as well as convulsions, diplopia, purpura, and abnormal platelet function. It is prohibited for those who are allergic to lipoic acid. It is recommended that patients use the drug under the guidance of a doctor, not blindly self-medication.
