The 5 electrodes of ECG monitoring are attached to the anterior chest in 5 positions: upper right, lower right, center, upper left, and lower left.
ECG monitoring is an instrument that continuously monitors the electrical activity of the heart, and there are three-lead and five-lead methods of examination that require the placement of three and five electrodes, respectively.
The electrodes of the five-lead system are placed in the right upper (RA) at the 1st intercostal space of the right midclavicular line, the right lower (RL) at the level of the raphe of the right midclavicular line, the center (C) at the 4th intercostal space of the left border of the sternum, the left upper (LA) at the 1st intercostal space of the left midclavicular line, and the left lower (LL) at the level of the raphe of the left midclavicular line.
ECG monitoring is widely used for monitoring of critically ill patients, intraoperative monitoring, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and is sometimes accompanied by a defibrillator for resuscitation.
