Who needs HPV vaccination?

Both Gardasil and Cervarix have been found to be effective in preventing HPV infection only if the vaccination is administered before it occurs, so it is recommended that the vaccination be administered before sexual intercourse begins. The FDA approved Gardasil for use in women aged 9-26 years and Cervarix for use in women aged 10-25 years. Merck’s materials show that Gardasil is highly effective in preventing male genital warts due to HPV6 and HPV11, the two types of HPV viruses that are the cause of most genital warts. Therefore, the FDA approved Gardasil for the prevention of genital warts caused by HPV6 and HPV11 in men aged 9-26 years. Vaccination has been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers, such as female/male anal and oropharyngeal cancers and male penile cancer, in addition to having the potential to prevent cervical cancer and male/female genital warts in women. Although there are no clinical trials directly evaluating the effect of vaccination in this regard.
