Tests required for the diagnosis of ALS/MND Blood chemistry tests include sedimentation, C-reactive protein, routine blood tests, transaminases and lactate dehydrogenase, thyroid function, vitamin B12 and folate, serum protein electrophoresis, serum immunoelectrophoresis, creatine kinase, creatinine, electrolytes, sugar, angiotensin transferase, lactate, aminohexose A and B tests, anti-GM1 antibodies, anti-Hu antibodies, anti MAG antibody, anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody, serology (Lyme disease, including HIV), DNA analysis (SOD1, SMN, SBMA, TDP43, FUS, C9ORF72). Cerebrospinal fluid: check cytology, cell count, total protein concentration, glucose, lactate, protein electrophoresis including IgG index, serology (Lyme disease, viruses), ganglioside antibodies. Urine: heavy metal screening for cadmium, lead, mercury, magnesium, urine immunoelectrophoresis. Neurophysiology: electromyography, nerve conduction velocity, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Diagnostic radiology: MRI/CT (head, neck, chest, lumbar), chest radiograph, mammogram. Biopsy: muscle, nerve, bone marrow, lymph nodes.
