Characteristics of facial erythema in lupus erythematosus

The facial erythema characteristic of lupus erythematosus may appear as ring or irregular, or as localized erythema or butterfly-shaped edematous erythema, etc. The common types of lupus erythematosus are subacute lupus erythematosus, discoid lupus erythematosus, systemic lupus erythematosus and so on. Different types of facial manifestations are different. 1. Subacute lupus erythematosus: the patient’s facial rash is ring-shaped or irregularly shaped erythema, and gradually expanding outward, usually with hyperpigmentation and accompanied by itching, vesicles, scabs and other phenomena. 2. Discoid lupus erythematosus: It is characterized by localized erythema, skin atrophy at the erythema, usually red or dark red, firstly on both sides of the cheeks, then spreading to the bridge of the nose, with butterfly distribution, also known as butterfly-shaped erythema. 3. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): the typical case is the butterfly-shaped edematous erythema across the bridge of the nose, which will show photosensitivity and will be aggravated by sunlight.
