Edema Grading Criteria

Edema can be divided into three types: mild edema, moderate edema, and severe edema.1 Mild edema usually occurs only in the eyelids, infraorbital soft tissues, anterior tibia, and subcutaneous soft tissues of the ankles, with mild depression of the tissues after acupressure, and quick recovery. Sometimes early edema is only weight gain without signs of edema.2. Moderate edema is edema of loose tissues throughout the body, with obvious or deeper tissue depression after acupressure and slow recovery.3. Severe edema is often severe edema of tissues throughout the body, and even tense and shiny skin in low-hanging areas or visible fluid exudation, which may be accompanied by pleural effusion, peritoneal fluid, and other plasma cavity effusion signs. Regardless of the degree of edema, you should promptly go to the hospital to check the urine routine, renal function, thyroid function, electrolytes, plasma proteins, liver function, liver ultrasound, electrocardiogram, cardiac ultrasound, atrial natriuretic peptide and so on to further clarify which cause of edema. Examples include cardiogenic edema, renal edema, low-protein edema, and hypothyroidism.
