What to do if the foramen ovale of the heart is not closed in the newborn

In neonates with patent foramen ovale, if the defect is small, most of them can be closed naturally; if the defect is large, surgical repair is needed.
1. Small defects: the diameter of the defect is less than 5mm, there is a chance of natural closure within 4 years of age, especially before 1 year of age, as long as there are no obvious symptoms, it can be followed up for observation.
2. Larger defects: heart failure and pulmonary hypertension may occur in adulthood, and it is recommended that repair surgery be performed in childhood. Catheter intervention for sealing is also an option under strict indications.
If a newborn is found to have cardiac patent foramen ovale, if there are no obvious symptoms and the defect area is relatively small, it can be followed up for observation, and try to go to the hospital for doctor’s guidance for treatment.
