Esophageal cancer surgery can effectively prolong patients’ lives

Esophageal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive tract. It is called “choking and hiccup” in Chinese medicine. It is mostly seen in men and is more common above the age of 40, with the peak age of incidence between 50 and 70. At present, China is one of the countries with the highest mortality rate of esophageal cancer in the world. However, if timely and proper treatment is provided, it can achieve good treatment effect or even cure. Since 2000, our hospital has adopted combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment with surgery as the main treatment method for 110 patients with satisfactory results, and more than 80% of patients have survived for more than five years. A review of medical records shows that almost all patients with esophageal cancer admitted to our hospital are common people from poor families when they were young. The causes of the disease are related to dietary habits (eating a very hot diet, drinking strong alcohol, eating salted fish, moldy food, etc.), malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (lack of vitamins, essential fatty acids and micronutrients such as aluminum in water and soil), nitrosamines and diseases, and genetic factors. Patients’ symptoms are mostly atypical, mainly manifesting as a feeling of obstructing food in the throat, pain behind the sternum, under the glabella or painful swallowing, a feeling of slow passage or retention of food, a feeling of foreign body in the esophagus, a feeling of dryness and tightness in the throat and a few patients may have symptoms such as stuffiness and discomfort behind the sternum and belching; when the esophagus develops to a certain extent, a series of typical symptoms related to swallowing disorders appear and persist, becoming more and more obvious. Such as difficulty in swallowing, pain, spitting of foamy mucus, and wasting and dehydration, weakness, etc. Patients often come to the clinic only at this stage. Many patients miss out on treatment as a result. Only a small percentage of our patients are able to undergo surgical treatment. We are a country with a high incidence of esophageal cancer and the highest mortality rate of esophageal cancer. The patients we admit are mainly from the triangle and populace area, as well as Hengban and Shaxi, and some are Hakka immigrants. So far, our esophageal surgery has been in the world’s first case, the surgical resection rate of esophageal cancer has reached 80%~95%, the 5-year survival rate after surgery is 25%~30%, and the 5-year survival rate after surgical resection of early stage esophageal cancer is above 90%. The role of surgery-based comprehensive treatment is the development direction of esophageal cancer treatment, which has been affirmed by most scholars to improve the surgical resection rate and reduce the local recurrence rate, and has greatly improved the treatment effect of middle and late stage esophageal cancer. The surgical resection rate of esophageal cancer in our hospital reached over 95%, and those who could not be resected also underwent rerouting surgery. One of the rerouted patients survived for 10 years with good quality of life after postoperative radiotherapy. In the follow-up, some patients were found to have lung metastasis and bone metastasis, and we used chemotherapy plus Chinese medicine to treat them, all of which achieved encouraging results. With the progress of esophageal cancer treatment, most tend to favor a comprehensive treatment method mainly based on surgery. No matter in the upper, middle and lower esophageal segments, as long as the cancer can be surgically removed, it should be operated as much as possible, and then other adjuvant comprehensive treatment can be given after surgery. If the patient’s body does not allow surgical resection, such as weakness, physical exhaustion or other diseases that are not suitable for surgery, radiation therapy can be used. The thoracic surgery department of our hospital has successfully performed more than 110 cases of esophageal cancer surgery, and successfully completed a case of thoracoscopic radical esophageal cancer surgery with combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment after surgery, and the 5-year survival rate of patients reached 90%, and the survival of four patients has reached 10 years, which is the longest survival time after chest tumor surgery.
