What causes generalized edema?

The causes of generalized edema usually involve chronic kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, thyroid disease and other factors. In chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome and renal insufficiency can cause edema due to decreased glomerular filtration rate, decreased plasma albumin due to high proteinuria, and sodium retention. Cardiac disease can cause edema due to valvular heart disease and cardiac insufficiency. Liver disease patients with advanced cirrhosis will have edema, as well as a large amount of ascites, gastrointestinal bleeding and other symptoms. Thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism can lead to swelling of the lower extremities. There are many other causes of generalized edema such as malnutrition and premenstrual syndrome. It is recommended that patients with generalized edema consult a regular hospital in a timely manner to identify the cause and treat the cause under the guidance of a physician.
