What is abdominal smooth muscle sarcoma?

Abdominal smooth muscle sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor arising from the smooth muscle of the abdomen, usually from the vessel wall, peritoneum, and smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract.
Smooth muscle sarcoma usually occurs in the middle-aged and elderly population. Abdominal smooth muscle sarcomas are found in the muscular layer of the stomach wall and the smooth muscle of the intestinal tract. Smooth muscle sarcomas may infiltrate into the subplasma or submucosa or present as a distended growth, forming a rounded or lobulated mass.
Early smooth muscle sarcoma does not affect the mucosa. However, as the tumor grows, it may invade the muscle layer and develop ulcer-like symptoms.
Early abdominal smooth muscle sarcoma may have no obvious clinical symptoms. As the tumor grows, it may compress the gastrointestinal tract or surrounding tissues, resulting in loss of appetite, poor bowel movement, blood in the stool, and acute and severe symptoms.
The disease should follow the principle of early examination, early detection and early treatment.
