The formula of Huanglong Tang includes Rhubarb, Mangnit, Citrus aurantium, Magnolia, Angelica sinensis, Ginseng and Glycyrrhiza glabra, etc. It is effective in draining heat and relaxing the bowels, tonifying Qi and nourishing Blood. In the formula, rhubarb, mangosteen, citrus aurantium dulcis, thick park, or Dachengqi Tang, can drain heat and pass stools, removing the accumulation of solid heat in the stomach and intestines. Ginseng replenishes qi, angelica nourishes blood, the two medicines are paired together, not only to protect the positive qi, but also to help get rid of the evil. Clinically, Platycodon grandiflorus is often added to promote the flow of lung qi, and ginger harmonizes the stomach and reduces rebelliousness (harmonizes stomach qi, makes the upward rebellious qi descend), which helps the stomach and intestines stagnation to flow downward smoothly. Glycyrrhiza glabra harmonizes all medicines (harmonizes the medicinal properties of different Chinese medicines). The combination of all the herbs is a good formula for combining both evil and positive. Huanglong Tang is used to treat Yangming visceral solidity and qi and blood insufficiency in which evil heat is present internally and the dregs of the stomach and intestines are in conflict with each other. Symptoms include diarrhea with clear water, or dry stools, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, thirst and body heat, nonsense, cold limbs, etc. Precautions: This formula is strong in laxative effect and should be stopped after taking; contraindicated in pregnant women and used with caution in the elderly and infirm.
