What are neural tube defects?

Neural tube defects include anencephaly, spina bifida, and other severe fetal malformations, and mid-gestation induction of labor is recommended in the presence of severe malformations. Screening for malformations is done at 22-24 weeks of gestation for the first macrosomia and around 26 weeks for the second microsomia. The vast majority of neural tube malformations can be screened out through the two types of screening for malformations. Once a significant neural tube malformation is detected by screening, the pregnancy needs to be terminated. Neural tube malformations used to be the most common fetal malformation, and the incidence of neural tube malformations has decreased in recent years through folic acid and micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy.
