There is no such thing as just one proprietary Chinese medicine for women’s insomnia. In treating insomnia, Chinese medicine practitioners usually have to identify the symptoms and treat them accordingly, and cannot generalize. If insomnia is caused by liver fire disturbing the heart, one can take Gentian Liver Pills; if insomnia is caused by deficiency of the heart and spleen (weakness of the heart and spleen), one can take Spleen Pills. 1. Gentian and Liver Pill is composed of gentian, chaihu, scutellaria and gardenia. It has the effect of clearing the liver and gallbladder and inducing dampness-heat. It is used for damp-heat of liver and gallbladder (damp-heat evils accumulated in liver and gallbladder), dizziness and redness of eyes (dizziness and red eyes), tinnitus and deafness, ear swelling and pain, dystocia (pain in the area of dystocia and ribcage), and bitterness in the mouth. Pregnant women should take with caution. 2. Gui Spleen Pill, composed of Astragalus, Radix Codonopsis, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Fructus Longan, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, and so on. It has the effects of benefiting qi and strengthening spleen (regulating the qi of spleen and stomach), nourishing blood and tranquilizing the mind. It is used for deficiency of heart and spleen, insomnia, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitation, fatigue, loss of appetite, disintegration and leakage (excessive menstrual flow or dribbling) of blood in stools and so on. It should not be taken by those who have external infection or solid internal heat. 3. Sour Zao Ren Combination is composed of sour zao ren, Zhi Mu, Poria, Chuan Xiong and licorice. It has the effects of clearing heat and fire (removing heat and fire from the body), nourishing blood and tranquilizing the mind (stabilizing the mind and soothing the emotions by nourishing the blood). It is used in treating insomnia due to emptiness and restlessness (empty and irritable, unable to sleep), palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic) and restlessness, dizziness, and so on. If the patient has the symptoms of insomnia for a long time, it must be treated in time, otherwise it will seriously affect the quality of life.
