Yuan Zhi has the effects of tranquilizing the mind and promoting intellectual development, transporting the heart and kidneys (the fire of the heart descends and the water of the kidneys rises to control each other), expelling phlegm, and subduing swelling. Far Zhi is bitter, pungent and warm in nature, and belongs to the heart, kidney and lung meridians. It is often used clinically in the treatment of insomnia, excessive dreaming, forgetfulness, palpitations, trance, coughing and phlegm, sores and swellings, and swelling and pain in the breasts, etc., which are caused by heart and kidney disorders (heart-fire exuberance and kidney-yin deficiency, and the physiological dysfunction between the heart and the kidneys). It is contraindicated for those with fire in the heart and kidney, and yin deficiency and hyperactivity (deficiency of yin fluid and hyperactivity of yang energy). In addition to being used alone, Yuan Zhi can also be used in combination with other medicines, such as in the treatment of epilepsy and seizures caused by phlegm blocking the orifices of the heart, it is often used together with Semen Xie, Tian Ma, and Quan Scorpion; and in the treatment of epileptic convulsions, it is often used in combination with medicines such as Acorus Calamus, Alum, and Ulcus, etc, which are used to dispel phlegm and open up the orifices and to wake up the mind by removing phlegm.
