Causes of jaw joint popping during eating

Temporomandibular joint popping is commonly caused by bad biting habits such as lateral chewing. Individual misshapen jaw deformities such as teeth rejoint, locked jaw, deep overbite of anterior teeth, mental and psychological factors such as tension and anxiety, as well as trauma, excessive work and study pressure and irregular work and rest can lead to displacement or perforation of the joint disc in the temporomandibular joint area or relaxation of the joint capsule, resulting in a monophonic or polyphonic popping sound in the temporomandibular joint area when the patient opens and closes the mouth. There is no need to be overly stressed when TMJ disorder occurs, as the majority of patients do not progress further, and only a small number of patients may experience pain or limited opening. In general, patients can be treated conservatively, including keeping the joint area warm, developing the habit of chewing on both sides, avoiding excessively hard foods with wide open mouth, and combining treatment with an occlusal plate, as well as corresponding medications, which can relieve patients’ symptoms.
