Overview of identification and treatment of enuresis in children

  Urine loss in children and adolescents is a disorder in which children over the age of three urinate spontaneously during sleep and are only aware of it when they wake up. It is commonly known as bedwetting. It is usually seen in children with insufficient endowment. In modern medical examination, there are no neurological or organic lesions. In ancient times, there were also cases of urinary incontinence accompanied by mental coma called enuresis, which is not part of this disease.  Urine loss in children is mostly caused by deficiency of endowment and weakness of lung, spleen and kidney qi, especially weak kidney qi is common. The Spiritual Pivot: “Deficiency leads to enuresis, and enuresis is remedied”. The Treatise on the Origin of Diseases: “Urine retention is due to the weakness of the bladder and the inability to contract water”. The main method of treatment is to warm and tonic the bladder and fix the astringency. Lung and spleen qi deficiency is common with spontaneous urine loss, white face, weakness and poor circulation, light red tongue and weak pulse.  It is advisable to tonify the lung and strengthen the spleen, consolidate the astringency and stop the emission. The formula is used to treat with tonifying the lung and strengthening the spleen, consolidating astringency and stopping micturition. Treatment with Jin Kui Kidney Qi Pill combined with Shrinking Spring Pill with addition and subtraction to warm the kidney and consolidate astringency.  Clinically, although urine loss is mainly due to deficiency of lung, spleen and kidney qi, the first step is to distinguish the severity of the deficiency. Generally speaking, the disease is mild in young children because their yang energy is not yet full, and can be cured with their growth and development as well as medication, and the kidney energy can be fixed by itself; in adolescents, the deficiency of lung and spleen qi is the main cause, and can be cured by supplementing the spleen and benefiting the qi as well as life conditioning. Secondly, we should strengthen the spirit of regulating, although children’s enuresis is not a major disease, but because it seriously affects the learning and life of children and adolescents, often resulting in shyness and low self-esteem. Therefore, while treating, encourage the patient to enhance self-confidence, with appropriate physical exercise to enhance physical fitness, the treatment will be more effective.
