Does adult funnel chest get worse?

Funnel chest in adults with severe deformity may gradually worsen, affecting cardiopulmonary function and corresponding symptoms.
Funnel chest type common chest wall deformity, mainly refers to the sternum, costal cartilage, part of the ribs sunken backward, showing a boat-shaped, funnel-shaped deformity. For adults, if the deformity is severe and is not treated promptly, symptoms such as limited mobility, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, palpitations, shortness of breath, and dyspnea may occur because of the impact on cardiopulmonary function.
For those with severe deformity that affects respiratory and circulatory functions, surgery should be performed as early as possible. Traditional surgical procedures include sternal lift, sternal revision, and sternal revision with tibia. In recent years, minimally invasive corrective surgery for funnel chest has been gradually carried out with better results.
It is recommended that adult patients with funnel chest should seek medical treatment in time and follow the doctor’s instructions, so as to avoid gradual progression of the disease.
