Do you need surgery for a 2mm patent foramen ovale?

If a woman is about 24 weeks pregnant and has a 4D ultrasound and the fetus is found to have an unclosed foramen ovale of 2 millimeters, it is not mandatory to surgically induce labor to terminate the pregnancy, but rather to consider continuing the pregnancy. This is because many fetuses have a foramen ovale that slowly closes over time. Even if the fetus is born with the foramen ovale unclosed by 2 millimeters, immediate surgery is not necessary at this point. Because the child is relatively small, it is likely that the foramen ovale will gradually develop and grow back. However, if the foramen ovale still does not close when the child grows up, surgery is necessary.
