Does a child’s unclear speech necessarily mean there is a problem?

Parents are often anxious about their children’s unclear pronunciation and worry that there is something wrong with them. Does it matter? And what should parents do? 1-2 years old is the baby’s language learning period, from the beginning of the teeth to the gradual increase of vocabulary, many children before 4 years old have the problem of unclear pronunciation. There are many reasons for this, among which pathological reasons include: congenital cleft lip, cleft palate, short tongue tie, missing or malformed teeth, brain development disorder, impaired hearing, etc. Many parents attribute their babies’ unclear pronunciation to the short tongue tie, and take their children to the hospital to ask for tongue tie cutting as long as they have a little unclear speech. In fact, this idea is very one-sided, the short tongue tie is certainly one of the reasons for unclear pronunciation and incorrect spitting, but it is not the only factor, it usually only affects the child’s inability to pronounce certain words, but does not play a major role in the whole pronunciation process. Generally speaking, the tongue ligament of newborns extends to the tip of the tongue or close to the tip of the tongue, and gradually retreats toward the root of the tongue during the development process. Therefore, the tongue tie is mostly tense in infancy, which is a temporary physiological phenomenon. As the child grows older and the milk teeth erupt, the attachment of the tongue tie will gradually move down to the mouth and gradually become thin and loose, and the tongue mobility will become more flexible. Children of 3-4 years old have more and more vocabulary, and they are eager to express their thinking in their own language, while they have just learned to speak not long ago, the language center of the brain and vocal organs are not yet mature, especially some complex sounds, often have inaccurate pronunciation. In addition, if the child has been growing up listening to dialect after birth, or if the adults around the child speak Mandarin in a non-standard way, it will also affect the child’s Mandarin pronunciation. The child’s pronunciation is related to the auditory function, language environment, intelligent development, pronunciation degree and other factors, these factors are generally improved gradually from 4 to 8 weeks old, therefore, there is no need to worry excessively about the inability of pronunciation of infants and toddlers, children have certain self-correcting ability and will gradually spit out words clearly, some normal children can only be completely corrected through learning after school. If the child does have pathological problems, then targeted treatment is needed.
