A chest radiograph can reveal the size of the heart shadow, whether there is enlargement of the heart, whether there is high pressure in the pulmonary artery, and whether the heart is predominantly large in the atria or in the ventricles. It is also possible to see whether there is a double atrial shadow caused by mitral stenosis, and whether there is an enlargement of both atria, especially the left atrium. The presence of pulmonary stasis, pulmonary edema, and butterfly-like hilar manifestations can also be seen on chest radiographs, and if this manifestation is present, the patient should be considered to have heart failure. It is also possible to see whether there is widening of the aorta, whether there is a right-sided heart, and whether there is a pericardial effusion.
