Liver-stomach disharmony refers to liver qi stagnation (poor qi and blood transportation in the liver, emotional depression), stomach disharmony (obstruction of the stomach’s function of ventilation and descending), with distension and pain in the epigastrium and coats of the stomach, belching (hiccups), acid swallowing (swallowing of acid that rushes upward from the stomach to the mouth and pharynx), and emotional depression as the main symptoms. Symptoms of Liver-Stomach disharmony include distension and pain in the stomach and epigastrium, coercion and ribs, uncertainty of movement, ambiguous gas, noisy acid swallowing (a feeling similar to hunger, emptiness with burning heat in the stomach), hiccups (burps), lack of food and drink, depression, tai shi, or irritability. The tongue is pale red with thin yellow tongue coating, and the pulse is stringy. Liver-stomach disharmony is mostly caused by emotional discomfort (unruly emotions), liver qi stagnation, transverse attack on the stomach (the liver qi is not smooth so as to infringe on the function of the stomach), and loss of gastric harmony and descending of the stomach. When the above discomfort occurs, the doctor should guide the use of medication, not self-medication.
