How to tell the difference between the upper focus, middle focus and lower focus

The concept of San Jiao in Chinese medicine can be differentiated into “San Jiao of the six viscera”, “San Jiao of the parts” and “San Jiao of the identification”. The three “parts of the triple jiao” can be differentiated according to their location and function. The upper jiao is the area above the diaphragm, including the heart, lungs, head and face. The upper jiao is mainly responsible for the promotion and dispersal of qi. It can be understood as dispersing Wei Qi, guarding the periphery, promoting the operation of Qi and blood, and nourishing the whole body. The scope of the middle jiao is the upper abdomen below the diaphragm and above the umbilicus, including the spleen, stomach, liver and gallbladder. The physiological function of the middle jiao is mainly to digest food and to recycle the substances useful to the body and transport the dregs downward. The lower jiao is generally defined as the area below the umbilicus and includes the major organs such as the large and small intestines, the bladder, and the kidneys. The function is to excrete the dregs and expel the unwanted wastes from the body in a timely manner.
