Postoperative awake time after epidural hematoma combined with brain hernia is variable and usually correlates with the severity of the brain hernia.
Simple epidural hematoma is less damaging to the cerebral cortex, and usually the patient can be awake 1 day after the operation, but if it is complicated by brain hernia, the awake time is usually not fixed. If the symptoms of brain hernia are mild and short, and the brain hernia hasn’t caused too much damage to the brain tissues, the patient can be awake within 2 to 3 days after the operation.
If the brain hernia is more serious, and not get timely treatment, the brain hernia is very easy to cause brain tissue prolonged ischemic necrosis or brain stem injury, once the damage to the brain stem, the patient is usually awake for a long time, and may even have a long period of time without waking up.
