Symptoms of Infantile Herpes Stomatitis

Symptoms of herpetic stomatitis in infants are fever in the first two days of the illness, often with a high temperature, sometimes reaching 40 degrees, and then many clear blisters may appear on the oral mucosa, lips and tongue, which break down after a few hours to form ulcers, at which time the infant may refuse to breastfeed due to the pain. There will be red spots, yellow scabs or blood scabs around the mouth and lips of the infant, and the infant will have pain and itching. As the blood scabs fall off, the infant will regain health, but may still be re-infected. The diet should be light and easily digestible, and the child should be allowed to drink plenty of water.
