Potatoes that have been stored for too long can sprout and turn into green potatoes. If you eat green sprouted potatoes, you may get food poisoning. This food poisoning is due to the presence of an alkaloid called lobotropin in potatoes. Eating sprouted potatoes will show symptoms in the pharynx and mouth, with damage to the mucous membrane of the pharynx and mouth, which will show localized tingling, itching sensation, and even a burning sensation. If it has entered the esophagus and stomach, it will cause symptoms in the esophagus and stomach, manifesting as acid reflux, heartburn, foreign body sensation, nausea, vomiting, and when aggravated, digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea will occur. If more potatoes containing toxins are ingested, it can cause violent vomiting, resulting in water-electrolyte disturbance and dehydration. It may also affect blood pressure and heart rate, resulting in a drop in blood pressure, increased heart rate, panic, and even impairment of consciousness with drowsiness, lethargy, coma, and convulsions. It may also affect the patient’s respiration and cause respiratory failure, which may be life-threatening.
