After an abortion procedure, you will usually bleed for about 1 week. In most patients, the bleeding will completely clear up in about 5-7 days. It is not normal to bleed for an unusually long period of time, as with abortions, the procedure is done smoothly. If the bleeding is prolonged after the procedure, it usually indicates that the uterus is not recovering well and you need to consider if there is an infection present. In rare cases it can also be due to an incomplete abortion. Therefore, if there is prolonged bleeding, an ultrasound should be done to find out how the uterus is recovering, and if poor uterine contractions are being considered, medications to promote uterine contractions, such as epsom salts, need to be taken. If it is determined that there is a residual, it is recommended to do a timely removal of the uterus.
