Pain in the middle of the chest when the bone is pressed is referred to as sternal pain. There are many clinical causes of sternal pain, which can generally be classified as a sterile inflammatory reaction with no obvious cause or a local soft tissue contusion caused by trauma. In the case of aseptic inflammatory reaction with no obvious cause, most of them can be manifested as inflammation of the sternal periosteum, or inflammation of the local ligaments and muscles, which can lead to pain, mainly soreness, swelling and stabbing pain, which can be induced when pressed or touched by hand, and sometimes there may be radiating pain. If the sternal pain is caused by trauma, most of it is due to direct violence, resulting in local soft tissue damage and, in severe cases, fracture of the sternum. In this case, it is manifested by localized skin abrasions and contusions, subcutaneous petechiae, with obvious pressure and percussion pain, and pain can be induced by deep breathing.
