Does a broken rib hurt?

Fractured ribs can be painful, and there are two main reasons for the pain: firstly, during chest expansion and breathing, the broken ends of the fracture can be irritated, including the formation of localized hematomas, which can bring about pain due to the irritation. The second is that the fracture, hematoma itself, will affect the intercostal nerves accompanying the ribs, and there will be radiating pain, and the latter pain tends to be more intense. Therefore, a chest bandage is worn in all early rib fractures to minimize the expansion of the chest and the pain caused by the broken ends of the fracture. Of course, it is possible to remove the bandage, but, do a closure of the intercostal nerves and encourage the patient to breathe, expand the chest, and expectorate to minimize lung infection. Now, the latter concept would be more recognized and promoted.
