How long after surgery to remove the plate

The plate is usually removed about 1 year after surgery for upper limb fractures and 1.5-2 years after surgery for lower limb fractures. Usually it takes at least 10-12 months for the fracture site to grow completely solid after surgery, and no strenuous exercise is allowed during this period. The plate can be removed only when the fracture heals well in the postoperative radiographs 1 year later. For common fractures, such as upper limb and lower leg fractures, the plates can usually be removed within 1 year, while for lower limb thigh fractures, it is recommended that the plates be removed in about 1.5 years. In addition, if it is a comminuted fracture, the time to take out the plate should be postponed for several months. In some patients, the plate cannot be removed because of bone discontinuity, and the plate can be removed only after the fracture is completely healed by filming. The time to take out the plate varies from person to person. Young patients can take out the plate within one year, and it is safer for the elderly to postpone it for a few months.
