Will thyroid removal in children affect growth and development?

Does my child need any other treatment after thyroid surgery? The thyroid gland is a metabolic organ of the body. After total removal of the thyroid gland, the child will not be able to produce thyroxine. Thyroxine is the hormone that is involved in all metabolism in the body. Therefore, after surgery, you need to take thyroid hormone for the rest of your life. The thyroid hormone taken is very close to the one secreted by the human body and can be completely replaced. Therefore, parents of children with the disease do not need to worry. Can the thyroid hormone be taken to meet the growth needs of the child? As long as the thyroid hormone is supplemented regularly, it will not affect the growth and mental development of the child. Do thyroxine tablets have any side effects on my child? To be precise: the current medication is called levothyroxine, which is often called thyroxine tablets by the general public. This medication is actually a hormone secreted by the body itself and basically has no clear side effects, but it is important to control the amount of medication taken. The dosage is calculated according to the weight of the child. There is no pediatric form of levothyroxine, so you may take two tablets, one tablet or half a tablet after calculating the dose based on your weight. The main monitoring indicators are T3, T4, free T3, free T4 and most importantly thyrotropin TSH, which are within the normal range. If the dose is too much or too little, there will be some side effects. If you take too much, the child will have symptoms of hyperthyroidism, faster heartbeat, more sweating, increased food intake, etc.; if you take less, it will have a greater impact on the child, with slow metabolism, anorexia, eyelid edema, and in severe cases, it will affect the child’s intellectual development.
