How to treat heavy menstruation

Most menorrhagia is accompanied by abnormal menstrual cycle or period, such as early or delayed menstrual cycle or prolonged period, and severe prolonged period can be more than half a month. First of all, the cause needs to be found, and ultrasound examination can be performed to rule out endometrial abnormalities. Generally, submucosal fibroids, endometrial lesions or endometrial polyps can cause excessive menstrual flow. For submucosal fibroids >5cm, surgery can be performed; for endometrial polyps <5cm, Chinese herbal medicine can be used to regulate the menstrual flow to return to normal. Endometrial abnormalities can be treated by diagnostic scraping for pathological examination to determine the endometrial condition before symptomatic treatment. Excluding organic factors, excessive menstrual flow alone is considered by TCM as Qi stagnation and blood stasis, blood heat, and Qi deficiency, all of which may lead to excessive menstrual flow. Excessive menstrual flow due to Qi stagnation and Blood stasis is usually interspersed with large purple and dark blood clots. Excessive menstrual flow caused by Blood Heat is accompanied by early menstruation and prolonged menstrual cycle. Excessive menstrual flow due to Qi deficiency, accompanied by dizziness, weakness, sleep disturbance or anemia. Both Qi stagnation and Blood stasis, Blood heat, and increased menstrual flow due to Qi deficiency can be regulated with acupuncture and herbs with good results.
