Not all patients with hyperthyroidism experience hunger. Whether or not a hyperthyroid patient will experience hunger is closely related to the severity of the disease and the effect of medication. Most patients with hyperthyroidism exhibit hypermetabolic syndrome, which can be characterized by symptoms such as fear of heat and excessive sweating, hyperphagia, weight loss, and palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic). Some of these patients exhibit hyperphagia, which means they are more prone to hunger. Some patients do not show obvious symptoms of hyperphagia because their condition is mild. Patients with hyperthyroidism who are being treated with medications such as methylthiouracil and propylthiouracil, and whose hyperthyroidism is well controlled, generally do not experience hyperphagia. Patients with hyperthyroidism should follow the doctor’s instructions for regular checkups while taking the medication, and seek medical attention when symptoms occur.
