What is cricothyrotomy?

Cricothyrotomy is the puncture of the cricothyroid membrane with a thick needle to provide temporary gas passage and is one of the first aid modalities for people with respiratory obstruction and severe respiratory distress. The cricothyroid membrane, also known as the cone of elasticity, is an elastic connective tissue membrane in the laryngeal cavity that is conical in shape and is located between the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage. The thickening of the elastic fibers in the middle of the anterior portion of the cricothyroid membrane is called the median cricothyroid ligament. When acute laryngeal obstruction occurs, such as laryngeal edema, air cannot enter the lungs through the laryngeal cavity for gas exchange, and the body experiences respiratory distress, hypoxia, or even asphyxia, which can be life-threatening. In this case, a puncture can be made in the middle ligament of the cricothyroid membrane to establish a temporary passageway so that air can enter the body through the cricothyroid puncture. Cricothyrotomy is one of the first-aid measures and only provides temporary gas passage, mainly to buy time for operations such as tracheotomy.
