What does it mean to decrease the volume of the cerebral gyrus and deepen the sulcus?

Gyrus volume reduction and sulcus deepening are signs of significant volume reduction and atrophy of brain tissue. Generally, this is a sign of brain atrophy.
Gyrus volume reduction with deepening of the sulcus is usually caused by atrophy of the brain, and physiologic causes need to be considered. Increasing age is the most common physiologic cause of this phenomenon. When the age of the subject increases significantly, the aging and degeneration of the body will cause different degrees of brain atrophy, which will lead to the shrinkage of the cerebral gyrus with deepening of the sulcus.
Gyrus volume reduction and sulcus deepening also have a pathologic etiology. Cranial disorders such as chronic neurological damage, intracranial lesions, increased intracranial pressure, or hydrocephalus can also lead to significant cerebral atrophy and deepening of the sulci. Prompt brain tissue protection and neurological restoration can help reduce this phenomenon.
Further imaging should be performed to determine the cause of the reduced gyrus size and deepening of the sulci.
