Do keloids go away on their own?

Keloid scars are a type of benign skin tumor that, once formed, cannot disappear on its own. Keloid is a common skin condition that results from an overgrowth of fibrous connective tissue and collagen in the body following a skin injury. It occurs mainly in people with keloids and is characterized by a raised lump on the surface of the skin that is hard, smooth, shiny, dark red, with clear borders and persistent growth. The growth is often accompanied by mild itching and pain. There is no effective way to improve keloid scars, and they do not disappear on their own after formation. If the patient’s keloid affects the aesthetics, the growth of the keloid can be controlled by medication closure treatment, physical therapy, and laser treatment, but recurrence is more likely.
