What to do if you have cryptococcus in your cerebrospinal fluid

Cryptococcus in the cerebrospinal fluid should be treated promptly with antifungal drugs and symptomatic therapy.
Isolation and culture of cryptococcus in cerebrospinal fluid is the “gold standard” for the diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis, and all cryptococcal infections of the central system need to be treated.
1. Antifungal drug therapy: At present, effective anticryptococcal drugs are still limited to polyenes, triazoles, amphotericin B of pyrimidines, fluconazole, 5-fluorocytosine, and so on, alone or in combination. The course of treatment mainly includes induction period, consolidation period and maintenance period.
2. Symptomatic treatment: mainly include lowering intracranial pressure (can be treated with mannitol, furosemide and other diuretic therapy), timely potassium supplementation to correct electrolyte disorders, strengthening nutrition, regular follow-up, etc.
Cerebrospinal fluid culture of cryptococcus should be treated under the guidance of specialized physicians.
